and a little surprise

Well, yesterday was a very good day. I stayed up at the hospital all day, and it was just very calm. She's very stable... I'm used to sitting there with alarms blaring, but she isn't really setting them off. /
Around 9 yesterday, they took out her vent and started a nasal CPAP. I haven't called this morning, but as of last night she was doing perfect on it, breathing on her own with just little puffs of room air helping her out.
Richy took me to dinner for V-day, and it was amazing just being able to be up and walking... my life happens so fast, sometimes. But my heart was at the hospital, so we headed back pretty quickly.
The night nurses were great. One of them was in training, and it's always a little disconcerting to hear someone saying, now you pull the baby's blood from here... no, not like that...
But we asked when she would be stable enough to get her hair washed, and they said they would probably do it overnight. and then the nurse said have you gotten to hold her today??? And of course, I was like, uh... no. Because they told me it would be another week. And then the nurse said, "Well, we'll let you hold her tonight." Oh, man... I love good surprises. So I held her for 30 minutes or so, and then she got too comfy and started having a little apnea... so she got put back in her bed. But it was beautiful.

Today, Leah will be with me at the hospital, but first, a little shopping... Not much, though. I can only handle so much time away. I have dialup access at the NICU now, we'll see if I can get it to work today.

  21. Awesome Arberto! I know the feeling with just one infant, must be great with your crew. Joy beyond words when we’re playing with Keith and he’s laughing with me and having a good time, a joy I’ve never felt. Shannon videoed Keith totally cracking up about something she was doing yesterday, and him saying “da da da dad” a bunch. I was smiling so big that I thought my face was going to break when I was watching it!

  22. ya...

    I love babies too...

they're a recently discovered joy. I used to be neutral about them. Didn't dislike them, but...I didn't go nuts over them. Now I love kids!

  25. 2/14/07 - SHANGHAI, China) - Villagers in southwestern China are scratching their heads after an estimated more than $60,000 was spent to paint an entire barren mountainside green.

Workers who began spraying Laoshou mountain last August told villagers they were doing so on orders of the county government but were not told why, media reports said Wednesday.

The official Xinhua News Agency estimated the cost of the paint job at $60,600 and quoted villagers saying that if spent on actual plants and trees, the money could have restored a far greater area of barren mountain.

Some villagers speculated that Fumin County officials, whose office building faces the mountain, were trying to change the area's feng shui -- the ancient Chinese belief of harmonizing one's physical environment for maximum health and financial benefit.

A woman who answered the phone at the Fumin County forestry department said they also were unaware of reasons behind the paint job.

"This is an order from above. You should ask the leader from above. I don't have any information on this," said the woman, who like many Chinese bureaucrats, refused to give her name.

Others speculated it was an unusual attempt at "greening" the area in keeping with calls for more attention to environmental protection. Photographs of the mountain showed the exposed rock covered in an artificial green the color of Astroturf looming over houses against a scrubby background.

Laoshou mountain was quarried for more than two decades but ordered shut recently following complaints about dust and noise from villagers.

  26. HONOLULU, Hawaii (AP) -- An American Airlines flight made an unscheduled landing after pilots heard something skittering about in the wire-laden space over the cockpit.

The airline blamed the emergency landing of the Tokyo-Dallas flight with 202 passengers on a stowaway squirrel.

"You do not want a varmint up in the wiring areas and what-have-you on an airplane. You don't want anything up there," said John Hotard, spokesman for the Fort Worth, Texas-based airline.

He said pilots feared the animal would chew through wiring or cause other problems.

"So, as a precaution, we diverted," Hotard said.

Once on the ground late Friday, the Boeing 777's human passengers were put up in hotel rooms and later rebooked on other flights.

State and federal agriculture and wildlife officials boarded the plane, set traps and captured the eastern gray squirrel.

Hotard said the plane had flown to Tokyo from New York before the Dallas flight.

Honolulu, however, proved to be the squirrel's final destination. Fearing it might have been carrying rabies, authorities had the rodent killed.

  27. Hmmmm both very interesting, but I would have to say I like the painted hill side for originality. I have heard of stow away squirels before.

    ReplyDelete
  28. did anybody else know the guy was from texas when he said varmint?? awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  29. But, it’s a good thing they landed the plane when they heard the squirrel. He could’ve have bit some real important wire, like the wire that gives power to make the toilets flush. That would really stink!

  30. I did notice that and laughed.

  32. Flynn staggered home very late after another evening with his drinking buddy,Paddy. He took off his shoes to avoid waking his wife, Mary.

He tiptoed as quietly as he could toward the stairs leading to their upstairs bedroom, but misjudged the bottom step. As he caught himself by grabbing the banister, his body swung around and he landed heavily on his rump. A whiskey bottle in each back pocket broke and made the landing especially painful.

Managing not to yell,Flynn sprung up, pulled down his pants, and looked in the hall mirror to see that his butt cheeks were cut and bleeding. He managed to quietly find a full box of Band-Aids and began putting a Band-Aid as best he could on each place he saw blood.

He then hid the now almost empty Band-Aid box and shufled and stumbled his way to bed.

In the morning,Flynn woke up with searing pain in both his head and butt and Mary staring at him from across the room.

She said, "You were drunk again last night weren't you?"

Flynn said, "Why you say such a mean thing?"

"Well," Mary said, "it could be the open front door, it could be the broken glass at the bottom of the stairs, it could be the drops of blood trailing through the house, it could be your bloodshot eyes, but mostly.....it's all those Band-Aids stuck on the hall mirror.

  33. That's funny that they clarified the HUMAN passengers were put up in hotel rooms and rebooked..
